Purpose: The Lions Club, as one of the international organizations active in the field of social services, began its activities in Iran in the late 1950s and expanded within the framework of the cultural policies and modernization initiatives of the Pahlavi II era. The present study aims to examine the formation and expansion of the Lions Club in Iran over a period of two decades. The central research question is: How did the Lions Club emerge and develop in Iran?
Method: This study is based on data collected through documentary research, drawing on archival materials and library resources, and employs a descriptive–analytical approach.
Findings: From the 1960s until 1979, Lions Clubs in Iran pursued a continuous trajectory of growth in their provision of social services. Over the course of two decades, the organization evolved from a small institution into a nationwide network comprising approximately 300 clubs and nearly 8,000 members. In terms of organizational structure, the Lions of Iran represented one of the most coherent nongovernmental institutions prior to the Revolution. Through a clearly defined geographical division, a systematic reporting mechanism, and the convening of eighteen annual congresses, the organization ensured coordination and continuity in its activities. By engaging urban elites and women, Lions Clubs in Iran operated within the framework of the Pahlavi government’s cultural policies and reflected the state’s broader efforts to institutionalize new models of social participation.
