[English]

Purpose: Firstly, to introduce iron gall ink, its production process, corrosion and corrosion treatment. Secondly, to consider how to eliminate or minimize the damage caused by the ink, through the use of protection methods involving selecting and applying an appropriate treatment.
Method/ Research Design: Data obtained from library resources and available databases.
Findings and Results: Iron gall ink is comprised of four main components; copperas, gall, gum Arabic and water. Metal-catalyzed oxidation and acid-catalyzed hydrolysis are the two main causes of the deterioration of documents that were written in iron gall ink. Physical and chemical methods (aqueous/ non aqueous) for the conservation of documents containing iron gall ink are used. Each one of these methods has its own advantages and disadvantages and none of them fully guarantee the protection of the document in the long term.
