Purpose: To investigate formal and administrative characteristics of signet rings of Safavid rulers from Shah Abbas I to Shah Suleiman.
Methodology Comparative method is used based on primary historical sources like those of Munshaāt (secretarial essays).
Findings: The signet rings of later Safavid rulers were mainly described as "little seal" or "little seal of the ring" in historical resources and secretarial essays. The administrative identity of this seal was emphasized during the reign of Shah Abbas I and was chiefly used to seal oral commands and orders issued by the king. It seems that another signet seal, named "little seal ring", which had been made based on a prior seal in the reign of Shah Abbas II, was in use for a while, instead of the “little seal of ring”, for providing Fosul answers. Its occasional use and rather short administrative life, however, indicates that its role and function in the Safavid court system was not very significant.
