The Process of Establishing Gun and Cartridge Factories in the Qajar period (1807-1922): An Analytical Investigation

Abstract

Purpose: Kings and statesmen of the Qajar established military factories and produced weapons and cartridges in order to strengthen the military forces, develop the war industry, and fulfill the needs of the Iranian army. In this regard, some military factories were established in Tehran, Tabriz, and Esfahan. The purpose of this research is to investigate and analyze the performance of these factories from 1807 to 1922.
Method and Research Design:  Library resources including books and newspapers, and archival records were studied and analyzed.
Findings and conclusion:  At the beginning of the Qajar period, especially during the Iran-Russia wars, the performance of military factories was not efficient enough, but from the time of Nasir al-Din Shah, gunfire and cartridge factories played an important role. Despite the lack of self-sufficiency in this field, the factories succeeded in fulfilling some needs of the Iranian army, military equipment imports were reduced, and military industries developed significantly.
