Banning the Hijab in Esfahan

Abstract

This article studies the procedure of applying Reza Shah’s decree of banning the Hijab specifically in Esfahan and the outcomes that it had in this city according to the existing records and resources. The article concludes that banning the Hijab was one of the most controversial acts of Reza Shah. Many reactions and disagreements arouse from the ban of Hijab in Esfahan because this city was a religious and traditional city. Therefore the government resorted to enforcing the ban. At the same time, some social classes willingly accepted the ban.
