Abstract

Purpose: To examine methods of archival description in the National Archives of Iran during this period.
Method/ Research Design: In order to collect data, bylaws, archival arrangement and description manuals, and description worksheets designed during 1972- 2012 (11 worksheets) were studied and analyzed. Four professional archivists were also interviewed.
Findings: 11 description worksheets were are designed during 1972- 2012. Elements within them have gradually been standardized over the years. Description has mostly been at file and item levels.
Result: Considering the nature of archives and factors such as the quantity and the extent of archival records, as well as their patrons, time, budget, personnel, and emphases of the International Council on Archives (ICA), upper levels of description such as fond and series is recommended. The first step is to brief authorities and design appropriate description worksheets.
