Exploring Experts’ Opinions on the Use of the Internet of Things (IoT) on Museum Objects Standardized by CIDOC CRM

Abstract

Purpose:  The study aims to identify the effects of the Internet of Things (IoT) on museum objects standardized using the CIDOC-CRM conceptual reference model. By reviewing relevant literature on IoT and examining its applications in cultural heritage and museums, the strengths and weaknesses of this technology were identified. Furthermore, by observing CIDOC-CRM standardized objects, the potential applications of IoT in such contexts were investigated.
Method and Research Design:  The research employed thematic analysis. The statistical population consisted of information science experts, museum professionals, computer scientists, and archivists. Data were gathered through interviews with experts using a snowball sampling method and analyzed using MAXQDA software. Additionally, frequency percentage statistics were used for data analysis.
Findings and Conclusion:  The findings reveal that IoT technology significantly enhances museums in economic, service, and security-protection aspects. According to experts, CIDOC-CRM standardization facilitates IoT implementation by improving precision and ease of smart system integration, enabling better control of objects within the IoT framework, and fostering connections among objects within a museum and across museums. The study highlights that the first step toward smart technology implementation is homogenizing information. Moreover, standardized information ensures a more accurate and efficient smart system integration process.
