It is more than one millennium that Muslim artists and book binders, particularly in Iran, have used board for book covers. Although board has paper structure and is made of pulp or by pasting thin sheets of paper together, the thickness and stiffness of this material cause it to be a suitable support in many arts specifically In book binding.
This article is a survey of Iranian and foreign sources on the history and development of board making / using in book binding in Iran as well as other Islamic Countries (the Arabs, the Turks and India).
The author notes that since this research provides information about old techniques of board-making, it could be helpful in board preservation and restoration.
